If you’re undergoing a kitchen remodeling project, one decision you need to make is to choose a countertop material. While natural stone, such as granite, and solid surface tend to attract the most attention, you should also consider quartz. Quartz countertops offer a number of benefits.
Quartz countertops, also called engineered stone, are made from crushed quartz mixed with a small amount of resin. The manufacturing process allows for a wider variety of colors and patterns and a more consistent appearance than natural stone. Quartz has a finish with a depth that solid surface materials cannot produce. Because it is manufactured, quartz does not contain defects. Like granite, the seams may be noticeable, although choosing a darker color or a solid color will help conceal them.
Quartz is just as strong and durable as concrete, granite, and marble, but it is more forgiving and flexible. It will not crack or chip as easily and is scratch resistant. Quartz is, however, not as heat resistant as concrete or granite. You will need to use caution with hot pans.
Quartz is non-porous and never needs to be sealed like granite. Because it is non-porous, it is much more stain resistant than granite, marble, and concrete and will stand up well to things like wine, coffee, juice, and more. The lack of porosity also means it will not harbor bacteria or viruses. Quartz is virtually maintenance-free and can be cleaned easily with soap and water.
The cost of quartz countertops is similar to that of granite, marble, concrete, and slate.
While quartz countertops are typically considered for kitchens, they are also a great option for bathroom countertops. As with the kitchen, you will need to be careful when using hot hair appliances.
